Short answer: an online yoga teacher training is valid when the school running it is a Yoga Alliance Registered Yoga School (for RYT certificates) or prepares you for the Yoga Certification Board exam (for YCB certificates). The certificate does not say "online", and you register or sit the exam exactly as an in-person graduate would.
Yoga Alliance and online training
Yoga Alliance began allowing its registered schools to teach online in 2020 and later made that permanent. What matters to Yoga Alliance is the school's registration and the hours of the course, not the room you trained in. A graduate of a 200-hour course at a Registered Yoga School can register as an RYT 200 whether they trained on a mat in Rishikesh or on Zoom at home.
YCB and online training
The Yoga Certification Board, under India's Ministry of AYUSH, certifies people rather than courses: you earn a YCB certificate by passing its own theory and practical exam. A course — online or in person — prepares you for that exam. That is why YCB courses list an exam fee separately from the course fee.
Three checks before you pay
- Is the school listed? Search the school's name in the Yoga Alliance directory at yogaalliance.org. Om Yoga International is listed as a Registered Yoga School.
- Is the teaching live? Live classes with a teacher who can see you and correct you are what make an online course a training rather than a video library. Recordings should support live classes, not replace them.
- Are the hours real? A 200-hour course should show where the 200 hours come from — live hours, self-study and practice teaching. Ours, for example, is 120 hours live on Zoom and 80 hours self-paced.
Will studios accept it?
Studios and gyms look for the credential — RYT 200 or a YCB level — and for how well you teach in an audition class. Most never ask where you trained. If you want to teach in India in schools, wellness centres or government programmes, YCB is often the credential asked for; abroad, Yoga Alliance is the one most studios recognise.
